One of the things I have noticed about living here is that the only way to understand the directions you are given is to know where things used to be.
You want to find your way somewhere and the directions are full of such useful snippets as "Where the Arches used to be", "the old Woolworths" or "The old Summerland Site", "The hotel that used to be the Hilton" and "where Lido used to be"
These aren't too bad, but when something moves, it still might not be there for ever and I once heard the following directions to The Laughing Buddah:-
"Where Jurgens used to be, not where it used to used to be be where it used to be now"
Brilliant.
